How the tip is worked out

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage: a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $10, for a total of $60. Splitting between people divides that total evenly, so each of two people pays $30.

How much should you tip?

In the US, restaurant tips usually fall between 15% and 20% — 18% is a common middle choice and 20%+ rewards great service. Customs differ around the world, and some bills already include a service charge, so it's worth checking before adding a tip on top.
