How the horse age formula works

Horses grow up fast, then age steadily. A widely used estimate puts a horse's first year at about 6.5 human years and the second year adds about the same, so a 2-year-old horse is roughly 13. The third year adds about 5 (reaching around 18 — the horse equivalent of a young adult), and each year after adds about 2.5 human years. That's the model this calculator uses.

Horse life stages

Horses are usually grouped as foal (under 1), yearling (1–2), young horse (2–4), adult (4–15), and senior (roughly 20 and up). Most horses live about 25–30 years, and many stay active and rideable well into their 20s with good care.

This is a general estimate for information and fun, not veterinary advice. Breed, workload, and care all affect how a horse ages — your vet can advise on your individual horse.
