A full cord is 128 cubic feet of tightly stacked wood — the amount that fills a stack 4 feet high, 8 feet long, and 4 feet deep (4 × 8 × 4 = 128). To find how many cords you have, multiply your stack's length × height × depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 128. This calculator does that for you and, if you enter a price per cord, shows what the stack is worth.
A face cord — also called a rick — is a stack 4 feet high and 8 feet long, but only one log-length deep. Because the depth is just the length of the logs, its actual wood volume depends on the log length: 16-inch logs make a face cord about one-third of a full cord, and 24-inch logs make it about half. That's why a "face cord" price can only be compared to a full-cord price once you know the log length — so this calculator shows both.
Estimates assume tightly and evenly stacked wood; loosely thrown piles measure larger than they really are. A full cord is defined as 128 cubic feet (a 4 × 8 × 4-foot stack); a face cord is a 4 × 8-foot face one log-length deep. Actual burnable wood also varies with species, moisture, and how straight the pieces are.
