How much feed does a chicken eat?

A good planning figure for a full-grown laying hen is about a quarter pound (0.25 lb) of feed per day — roughly 1.5 to 1.75 pounds a week. Chicks and growers eat less on average over their grow-out (they start low and rise), so this calculator uses about 0.18 lb per bird per day as a blended average. Meat birds (broilers) eat more and ramp up steeply toward market weight, so it uses about 0.30 lb per bird per day across an 8-week grow-out. These are estimates — real intake changes with breed, weather, and whether your birds free-range.

How many bags of feed do I need?

Multiply your number of birds by the daily feed each one eats, then by the number of days you're feeding. Divide the total pounds by your bag weight — most feed comes in 50-pound bags — to get the number of bags to buy. At about a quarter pound per hen per day, a single 50-lb bag of layer feed lasts roughly one month for 6 to 7 hens. Add a price per bag above and the calculator will also estimate your feed cost.

This is a planning estimate for buying feed, not a precise nutrition tool. Daily intake varies with breed, age within a stage, temperature, and how much birds forage. Figures used: laying hens ~0.25 lb/day, chicks & growers ~0.18 lb/day average, meat birds ~0.30 lb/day average, per common poultry-feeding references and extension guidance.
